The Swiss driver Simona De Silvestro was involved in a big crash during practice Thursday in preparation for the disputed Indy 500 IndyCar Series IZOD.
De Silvestro was on his seventh lap when a shower of sparks sprang from under his car Nuclear Clean Air Energy No. 78 of the HVM Racing team in the entrance of Turn 3.
Presumably part of the suspension was suddenly broken.
The Dallara-Honda struck the protective wall at turn 3, made a head-to-tail before flying off and hitting the wall of Turn 4. The car has turned upside down with flames all around.
The security teams were quickly on scene and quickly extinguished the fire.
Simona has eradicated itself from the cockpit and was immediately transported to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis to receive treatment for second degree burns to his right hand and superficial burns to his left hand.
