Michael Schumacher Returns To Formula 1
A season that has already produced more than its fair share of thrills and spills just got even more exciting after it was confirmed yesterday that Michael Schumacher is to make a sensational comeback for Ferrari as temporary cover for the injured Felipe Massa.
The 40-year-old seven-time world champion will line up against reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton for the very first time at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on August 23.

Hamilton seals first win of 2009 Hungary Grand Prix
The Englishman took the lead after pole-sitter Fernando Alonso's Renault made an early pit stop and dominated ahead of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen.
Red Bull's Mark Webber was third with Brawn's Jenson Button down in seventh.
The Australian replaces team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who retired, in second place in the world championship.
Vettel, who suffered a front suspension failure while running eighth on lap 27 of 70, slips to 23 points behind the Englishman with seven races remaining and a maximum of 70 points available.
Nico Rosberg was fourth for Williams ahead of Hamilton's team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, Toyota's Timo Glock, Button and the second Toyota of Jarno Trulli.
Red Bull, who dominated the last two races in Britain and Germany, put in a surprisingly uncompetitive performance but they were in much better shape than Button.
The Englishman qualified eighth, but was starting on a heavy fuel load and was optimistic he would have a strong race. Instead, he was unable to make any impression on the cars at the front.
For the first time this season, that meant McLaren, whose form here confirmed that the revised aerodynamics they introduced in Germany two weeks ago have transformed the car.
McLaren started the season with an uncompetitive car, struggling in most races to even get into the points. Hamilton, the reigning world champion, had not even managed to finish on the podium until winning this race.
But a new front wing, diffuser and engine cover introduced at the last race have improved the car's pace by about 0.8 seconds a lap
Hamilton qualified fourth, but used his Kers energy storage and power-boost system to challenge the leaders at the start.
Alonso got a good start from pole position and retained first place but Hamilton briefly got up into second place at the first corner before being repassed by Webber.
The Red Bull was expected to be the strongest car in the race but, while Alonso initially built a small gap, Webber found himself under pressure from Hamilton, who passed him on lap five and proceeded to pull away and close on the Renault.
Alonso, who had planned to do a three-stop strategy in contrast to the two stops of most of the rest of the field, pulled in for his pit stop on lap 11.
He was released a fraction too early before the right front wheel was fully attached and it parted company with the car part way around the lap and was forced to retire with the consequent damage and a fuel pump problem.
By the time all the front-runners had done their stops, Hamilton had a six-second lead over Raikkonen and he was able to control the race from the front.
Webber slipped behind Raikkonen after a problem with a front wheel at his pit stop and he was also passed by Toyota's Timo Glock as he rejoined.
Red Bull chose the opposite tyre strategy from the other front-running teams, running the harder of the two tyre options for the first two stints of the race before switching to the softer for the final stint.
Whatever the reason, the Red Bulls lacked their recent pace but Webber drove consistently well to the final podium position and make it a good race for him from a championship point of view.
By contrast, his team-mate Vettel had a disastrous weekend, making a poor start from second on the grid and running eighth in the early laps.
He was running behind Rosberg when he suffered a front suspension failure on lap 27 and was forced to retire.
Toyota, both of whose drivers qualified outside the top 10, used a long first stint to put themselves in contention for the minor points places.
Button finally showed some pace in the closing laps once the track was coated in rubber and he was back on the softer tyres after using the harder ones in the middle stint.
That lifted him to seventh from eighth, but he will still be concerned at a third consecutive uncompetitive race.

Nissan pegs price of fun: $36,970 for new 370Z roadster
If you manage to come up with a mere $36,970 when you dig deep into your pockets, the new 2010 Nissan 370Z roadster can be yours starting in September. The Z droptop, offering 26 more horsepower than the previous version and a new automatically latching top, will come in four models. The fanciest will be the Touring Roadster 7AT at $41,820. (The 7AT refers to a seven-speed automatic transmission.)
By comparison, Audi's well-reviewed TT roadster runs from $35,200 for the 2.0 TFSI FrontTrak S tronic to $46,540 for the 3.2 quattro S tronic. But Nissan officials seem to like their roadster more:
“The new 370Z Roadster offers more refinement, quality, performance and sheer driving pleasure than any Z convertible that has come before – while retaining its great value positioning in the sports car segment,” says Nissan's U.S. marketing chief, Christian Meunier.
To give you an idea of the droptop premium, the 2009 hardtop 370Z went on sale priced from $29,930 to $35,760. The tony tourer has a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Honda Acura photos, details of ZDX crossover
The high-profile, segment-blurring car -Acura is calling it a "four-door sports coupe" but classes it on its website as a crossover -is going to be powerful. The drivetrain will feature a 300-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with a new six-speed automatic transmission. There's more:
It should be distinctive with a glass roof for plenty of light inside and hidden rear door handles. They're Zdx-interiorpg-horizontal hidden ostensibly for better looks, but may have the side benefit of dissuading unwanted in-laws or annoying co-workers from catching a ride with you.
ZDX will seat five and will have under-floor storage capability. About all Honda will say about pricing is that it will be somewhere between the MDX luxury SUV and RL luxury sedan.
'Cash for clunkers' rules are released
The law creating the $1-billion program went into effect July 1, but many dealers were reluctant to participate until they got a look at the rules. The arrival of the 100-plus-page document Friday morning sparked a registration rush that overwhelmed the government's computers, resulting in waits of two hours or more, the National Automobile Dealers Assn. reported.
The program is also exciting a fair amount of interest among consumers. Online auto information provider Edmunds .com said its traffic has been at record levels in recent weeks. Part of that comes from what may be the beginnings of a rebound in car sales, but the clunkers program is helping.
"We've clearly had traffic coming in that's being driven by 'cash for clunkers,' " said Marc Cannon, spokesman for AutoNation Inc., which owns 77 dealerships in California, including Power Chevrolet lots in Valencia, Hawthorne and Irvine. "We started doing deals early this morning."
Automakers are also jumping on the bandwagon. General Motors and Chrysler ran full-page ads in Friday's Times touting the program, and several manufacturers are offering special incentives.
The government estimates that the program will generate sales of 250,000 new cars, although Edmunds.com Chief Executive Jeremy Anwyl figures that about 200,000 of those sales would have happened anyway as part of the natural retirement rate of old vehicles.
Anwyl also notes that the rules are fiendishly complicated. Much of that is a result of the government's effort to prevent fraud. For instance, the program requires trade-ins to be junked, and the rules include elaborate procedures that dealers must follow to permanently disable the engines of clunker trade-ins so they can't be resold. (Part of the idea behind the law was to get older, less-fuel-efficient vehicles off the road.)
Shoppers may also be in for some frustration, above and beyond the tight restrictions they need to meet to qualify (read on for details on how the program works). For example, buyers must show proof of one year's insurance -- which would be recorded on their policy but may not be reflected on the insurance card they carry in their wallet.
Consumers should also be wary of official-looking clunkers websites that have sprung up, many of them asking for personal information. The official government website for the programs is www.cars.gov. The government has also set up a hotline at (866) 227-7891.
Kelley Blue Book (www.kbb.com) and Edmunds.com offer online calculators to help buyers decide whether a particular deal makes sense under the clunkers program.
Here are some questions and answers about the program.
How do I know if my trade-in vehicle is eligible for the program?
It must have been manufactured in 1984 or later and have a combined city-highway fuel economy rated at 18 miles per gallon or less. The program is advantageous only if the trade-in value is less than the minimum $3,500 offered by the government.
Can the credit be applied to any new vehicle?
All imports and domestics with a list price under $45,000 are eligible, as long as they meet fuel economy standards of at least 22 mpg for cars; 18 mpg for SUVs, small pickups and minivans; and 15 mpg for large vans and trucks. The new vehicle's fuel economy must exceed the trade-in's by at least 4 mpg for cars, 2 mpg for SUVs and 1 mpg for large trucks to qualify for the $3,500 rebate. The full $4,500 rebate kicks in at an increase of 10 mpg, 5 mpg and 2 mpg, respectively.
Remember, the mileage numbers are based on combined city-highway driving mileage as measured by the federal government -- not the mileage you actually get. The fuel economy numbers can be found at www.fueleconomy.gov.
What happens to the clunkers after the trade-in? Can they be resold?
The Car Allowance Rebate System requires that the trade-in be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold. The wrecking yard is allowed to salvage some parts for resale, excluding the engine and drivetrain.
Can I game the system by going to a junkyard and buying a wreck to use as a trade-in?
No, the program requires the vehicle be in drivable condition, continuously insured and registered to the same owner for at least a year before the trade-in.
I have several clunkers in my garage. Can I trade them all in?
There is a limit of one trade-in per owner under the program, with the credit applying to the lease or purchase of a single new vehicle.
How long does the program last?
Until Nov. 1 or until the $1 billion is spent, whichever comes first.

Felipe Massa in intensive care
Hungary Grand Prix Formula 1 Ferrari pilot Felipe Massa ranking tour accident.
Felipe Massa is still in a stable condition in a Budapest hospital, having come through the night with no further problems after his accident and surgery yesterday.
The Ferrari driver had to be airlifted to the AEK Hospital in Budapest having sustained head injuries in a fresk crash near the end of Q2.
Massa's helmet was struck by a suspension component that had become detached from Rubens Barrichello's Brawn car, with the Brazilian appearing to be knocked unconscious by the blow.
His car then speared off the road and had a heavy frontal impact with the tyre barriers at turn four.
He underwent surgery to attend to skull damage and brain concussion yesterday afternoon, and was then placed in an induced coma, as is standard procedure in such circumstances.
Ferrari was pleased to announce that there were no additional issues during the night and that his condition this morning was unchanged.
"After undergoing an operation yesterday afternoon, Felipe Massa's condition remains stable and there were no further complications through the night," said a team statement.
"He will be given another CT scan today, which will provide more precise information."
The scan should reveal more details about the extent of Massa's injuries, and the likely course of his recovery.
Sources in Hungary estimate that he could be sidelined for at least two months, and perhaps the rest of the 2009 season.
